Rivers and Hills: Banner Plant Powers Sheffield’s Largest Mural
Sheffield is now home to its largest mural, Rivers and Hills, a striking new landmark on Wellington Street in the Heart of the City district. Commissioned by Sheffield City Council and Marketing Sheffield – with support from several local businesses – the mural celebrates the natural beauty and distinctive topography that have defined the city since the 12th century. Banner Plant proudly played a key role by supplying all the powered access equipment required for its creation at no cost to bring the ambitious project to life.
The artistry behind the mural
A collaboration between two leading figures in the street art world, Rivers and Hills offers a bold tribute to Sheffield’s landscape. Local artist Rob Lee joined forces with designer INSA to reimagine the city’s terrain through a contemporary lens.
Rob’s contribution features a dramatic 3D graphic interpretation of Sheffield’s iconic hills, while INSA created 95 individual artworks inspired by the city’s waterways. Together, their work forms a seamless and visually captivating mural. The artists also incorporated augmented reality, allowing viewers to experience the mural in motion via a mobile app.
Banner Plant’s role
Our powered access solutions were instrumental in enabling the artists to work safely and efficiently at height, ensuring the successful delivery of this large-scale public artwork.
“Henry Boot and Banner Plant have gone above and beyond to help make *Rivers & Hills* possible, and support the Sheffield Inspires work to promote Sheffield and our impact as a city. Without going into the details, we had some delays, but they rolled with us and fully supported this amazing creative interpretation of Sheffield’s unique geography which has helped inspire greener cities around the world. On behalf of Marketing Sheffield and Sheffield City Council, I’m truly grateful for their unwavering commitment to this incredible half a kilometre squared of absolutely mind-blowing and boundary-pushing street art that is now part of the fabric of our city.” Mark Mobbs, Marketing Manager at Sheffield City Council
Henry Boot and Banner Plant offered further support through arranging the services of timelapse film experts Reach Timelapse. The Reach team also provided timelapse footage for the project, engaging the public of Sheffield throughout the project, at no cost.
“We are thrilled and honoured to be part of this landmark project in the heart of Sheffield city centre. Contributing to the realisation of Rob’s vision has been a unique and rewarding experience for Banner Plant. We are excited to see the positive impact that this innovative piece of art will have on the city and its residents.” - Gary Crofts, Sales and Operations Director at Banner Plant
